Hearing Aid Use and Dementia

Hearing aid use and dementia. "Those with hearing loss who do not wear hearing aids have over a 42% increased risk of developing dementia." On April 13th 2023, the Lancet published a report on the link between wearing hearing aids and the risk of dementia in middle to older aged adults. The Lancet, one of the world's most wide reaching scientific journals, found that individuals with hearing loss who do not wear hearing aids have over a 42% increased risk of developing dementia. They also learned that those wearing hearing aids had the same risk for dementia as those with no hearing loss at all.

Without hearing properly, the brain has to use other cues such as lipreading or context to "fill in" conversations. Over time this can be exhausting as the individual is constantly exerting extra effort to hear. In addition to this, those experiencing hearing loss often withdraw socially, as it's hard to communicate when you can't hear. Unfortunately, social isolation can also contribute to cognitive decline.Hearing aids allow those who have hearing loss to reconnect with the world, as well as ease the load on their brain. Treating hearing loss promptly is extremely important as the worse it becomes, the harder the brain has to work to compensate.
