Tips to Communicate With People Who Have A Hearing Loss During COVID-19




It is important to remember to be patient and kind with those who have a hearing loss during this time. It can be draining to get through a conversation, especially with masks eliminating the use of lip leading. Here are some tips to help overcome the frustration of communication on both ends and reach the common goal of communicating !


1. Make sure to have the persons attention before you speak

2. Don’t shout! Speak slowly and clearly

3. If the person asks you to repeat yourself or answers incorrectly, ask the question again but with different words

4. Use gestures and point to object or places you are talking about

5. Use short sentences and pause between sentences

6. Take your time when speaking to ensure the person understood what you said

7. If possible, opt for a face shield

8. Be patient
